Kaua`i Orchid & Art Festival to Premiere March 30-31, 2007 in Hanapepe
PRESS RELEASE: January 15, 2007TO: ALL MEDIA Contact: Hanapepe Economic Alliance, Joanna Carolan, Treasurer -call 335-5944; FAX (808)335-3830
Kaua`i Orchid & Art Festival to Premiere March 30-31 in Hanapepe
The industries of art and agriculture merge at the first annual Kaua'i Orchid and Art Festival. This new festival will be held in Hanapepe, Kaua’i, March 30 and 31, 2007. A joint effort of the Hanapepe Economic Alliance and the Garden Island Orchid Society, a non-profit organization that offers the Spring Fantasy Orchid Show each year.
The event will offer displays, educational workshops and activities in art and in orchid growing. Art and orchid competitions will be held, and a music concert is planned. An award for the “Most Paintable Orchid” will be announced each year. Art workshops will be offered on digital art photography and basic principles of plein air painting.. Two cooking workshops will be offered on vanilla cuisine. A fantastic concert featuring Ken Emerson and the band Swampdaddy begins at 6 p.m. Friday night at the corner of Kona & Hanapepe Roads. The Hawaiian Congregational Church is offering great plate lunches both Friday and Saturday. Enjoy the music on Saturday from noon and see the Kauai Orchid & Arrt Festival competition finale awards at 4 pm.
.
Orchid growers and art appreciators, both visiting and on island, will be attracted to the festival, and the public will enjoy the beautiful displays of both orchids and art. A marketing and promotional campaign is underway.
An established heritage of orchid growing exists in Hanapepe that began in the 1950's with Shimonishi Orchids and others who grew and retailed along Hanapepe Road. The orchid industry continues today by the efforts of a productive group of growers around the island. In recent years, an artist community established itself in town and Hanapepe is known as the art capital of Kaua`i. Both groups share an interest to promote their products.
The festival is supported in part by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Kaua’i Office of Economic Development. Businesses and individual support is welcome. For more information, call 335-5944 and see the festival link on HTTP://kauai.net/hanapepe/ <http://kauai.net/hanapepe/>

Eye catching Hanapepe Kiosks Installed at Lihue Airport
All who travel through the Lihue airport baggage claim areas will be greeted with two informative kiosks freshly designed to educate about Hanapepe town and activities of that area of the island.
The kiosks feature the Historic Hanapepe Walking Tour, historic sites, building photos, businesses, and other activities including the Friday Art Night. Artists, galleries and businesses contributed to the outreach project that was coordinated by Hanapepe Economic Alliance. Carpenters Al Lopes and Skip MacWilliams pushed hard to get the kiosks constructed. Artist Dawn Traina painted up to the last minute before installation.
“We wanted to get these updated and renovated kiosks installed before the end of the year to allow visitors a fresh view of the Hanapepe area,” said Joanna Carolan, HEA treasurer. “Extra effort went into photographic preservation to last many years.”
The Hanapepe Economic Alliance, a nonprofit corporation, received a grant from the Hawai`i Tourism Authority and the County of Kaua`i Office of Economic Development to coordinate the project. Anyone interested in the Historic Walking Tour or Friday Art Night may call 335-5944 or visit http://kauai.net/hanapepe.

Historic Photos Sought
PRESS RELEASE - DATE 6/15/05
TO: - All Media
MEDIA CONTACT: Carol Bain, 808-246-2111 bain@kauai.net
Photos of Historic Hanapepe Sought
Hanapepe Leaders
at Hanapepe Economic Alliance (HEA) are seeking photos of buildings and
of life in old Hanapepe town. Interpretive plaques will include enlarged
photos mounted on selected buildings along Hanapepe Road. These photos
will call attention to historical buildings and sites featured in the
self-guided Historic Hanapepe Walking Tour map published in March, 2005.
"We are specifically looking for photos of the older buildings," said Joanna Carolan HEA board member, "but any photo that shows the old days in Hanapepe will be welcomed for this project. Many business owners lost photos in the floods that occurred in the early 1960's and before the Army Corps of Engineers built the levee. It is hoped that some families may have kept prints of photos elsewhere and would like to share them."
Hanepepe has 43 buildings and sites that meet the criteria for the Federal and State historic registry. HEA is a non-profit organization that received funding from Hawai`i Tourism Bureau and the County of Kaua`i to develop interpretive, historic information and promote this heritage for Hanapepe. A goal of the project is to increased appreciation for town heritage and the people who built Hanapepe. Over the next two years of this project, HEA plans to introduce this map to children in schools, and invite young people to learn the history and heritage of Hanapepe. Maps are available at most Hanapepe stores.
Any one who has photographs to share contact Joanna Carolan, 335-5944 or Dawn Traina 335-3993. Accepted photos will be duplicated and original returned to owner. Photo credit and/or donor name will be included if requested. Public is invited to attend HEA meeting Monday, June 20, 5:30 p.m. at Banana Patch Studio, 3865 Hanapepe Road. To RSVP call 335-5944.
