The Hanapepe Economic Alliance’s Mission is to support the Economic Revitalization, Historic Preservation, Beautification, and Promotion of Hanapepe.

 The Hanapepe Economic Alliance was formed in 1997 by a group of Hanapepe businesses dedicated to the historic preservation and economic revitalization of Hanapepe. This 501(c3) non-profit organization spent several early years gathering historical information, creating a Historic Walking Tour map and establishing Friday Art Night. In 2007, they established the Kauai Orchid and Art Festival, an annual event which was held in conjunction with the annual GIOS Spring Fantasy Orchid Show. They will continue to seek to improve and expand upon its established events, and to encourage participation from anyone interested in improving and supporting the town of Hanapepe.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

-Established Friday Art Night in 1997, promotes & maintains the weekly event
-Established the annual Orchid & Art Festival
-Designed, created and installed two kiosks at the Lihue Airport
-Created rack card which are displayed throughout the community
-Organizes clean up and tidy town initiative
-Created a high end media piece for the promotion of shops and galleries
-Created colorful map used for Historic walking tour
-Created and maintains a town website and social media presence

-2024 Restored the Historic Hanapepe town Gateway Signs

-Built and maintains town trash cans and recycle bins

-Paid for an kept porta-potties open 7 days per week while the county rebuilt the park restrooms which are now open

Friday Art Night is a weekly not-for-profit event organized by the Hanapepe Economic Alliance. HEA supports the economic revitalization, historic preservation, beautification, and promotion of Hanapepe to visitors and residents. Fees collected by HEA help offset the costs of the event including public restrooms, security, advertising, permits, cleaning, coordination, and all other expenses accrued to maintain a safe community event. All participating businesses, vendors, non-profit groups and individuals are encouraged to join the HEA.

 Initial Projects

• Policy 1: Peripheral Parking and Visitor Access Initiative

o Addresses current consternation around on-main street parking and congestion by

dedicating areas for off-main street parking, incl. ample public parking signage

• Policy 2: Town Beautification and Shade Initiative

o Make Hanapēpē greener, cooler, and more beautiful by planting trees and plants

o Shade trees near storefronts and parking areas

o Bench and pedestrian area beautification

o Coordinated large/robust decorative planters along main road, where in-ground foliage

doesn’t exist

• Policy 3: Historic Main Street Place-Making

o Help businesses design and utilize new sidewalk to emphasize historic character and

improve pedestrian experience

Long-Term Vision

Intending to address over time:

• Events and festivals (incl. Christmas)

• Hanging banners/pendants across main street – similar to previous Christmases with red bells

• Public art

• Night lighting/safety – e.g. wrap poles in solar lights

• Coordinated awning décor – e.g. lanterns, string lights, hanging flowers, etc.

• Revive bougainvillea on hill

• Tourism management
